Windjammer 2 in the test: The illegitimate child of Pong & Street Fighter ... with Frisbees!
Whole 28 years, Windjammers saw the light of the arcade world. Fans will probably have been a continuation of the wild Arcade-Frisbee action for years, if not decades have given up. However, the title could still be maintained alive thanks to a small competitive community over the years.

The entire situation changed when the French developer studio Dot emu, which specializes in older retro titles, gave back to life, announced that they would deal with windjammer.
Instead of a new edition or improved re-publication, this was even a real sequel. The direct successor Windjammer 2, which was actually announced for 2020, is finally here in 2022 with two more years late.
You expect to expect action-packed Frisbee battles, but this time with hand-drawn graphics, new characters and new stages. New game mechanics, which are supposed to expand the classic gameplay useful, are of course also included.
To what extent the entire Frisbee action works at all and how much fun you can have it, we clarify in this test.

What are the rules?
Let us first clarify how exactly windjammer is working at all. Two players are facing a field. Behind each player is a gate, between the players a net, which separates the two field halves.
The gate is divided into different zones and depends on the zone either three or five points. When the dry leaf touches the ground, you get two points. The one who knacks the 15 points first, wins the sentence. If you can decide two sentences for yourself, you have won the best-of-three.
That sounds great about playing like pong or sports like tennis, and in the end, it's something in the direction. However, what windjammer makes unique, the action-packed gameplay is.
FRISBEE ACTION AT ITS BEST
It is always exciting to wait for aware of who makes a mistake first and the surrounding slice no longer caught in time. It is all the more satisfactory, even if you manage it then to handle the opponent with a targeted litter perfect, and you can secure the points.
Advantageous here is also the whole look that fits perfectly with the gameplay, and the songs, which also fit well and make mood.
Variety is due to the ten different characters, which differ all in terms of speed and throwing force. Furthermore, every character still has a unique special-move that can be used at full charging and is particularly difficult for the opponent to hold.
Even the different maps differ neatly from each other. It is moving here from a beautiful field on the beach over a junkyard to a real stadium. But there are not only visual differences, the different locations also differ in size, placement of the points zones in the gate and the obstacles that are in the middle of the playing field.
Probably the most special map is the casino, on which the score reachable by a goal is reimbursed by a goal. It all ensures that Windjammer is a lot of fun and remains fresh and varied even after a few rounds.
Easy to Learn, Hard to Master
You can throw the disk normally, here you can then influence angle and the rotation of the disc. The fact that the disk can bounce off the wall leads directly to countless different litter options and trajectories.
Then there is a praise, which is a very high litter that will land rather at the back of the playing field. Exactly opposite you can also push the slice very short and just, just over the net in the middle and so force the opponents rather forward.
Instead of catching and throwing the disk, you can easily go back directly with a blow, which brings out a very powerful shot, but also hard to master.
If you get in distress, you can use the full special strip instead of a special attack also to promote the Frisbee for a further time in the air and save yourself in front of it.
Everything fine, what the gameplay is concerned? Not perfect. The greatest criticism hangs together with the control, because throwing the Frisbee and the dense are on the same key. So it happens again and again that we operated the key minimum too early and instead of cycling, cheerful and oriented by the area of the area.
This is annoying and changing the key assignment unfortunately not. So you are exposed to this frustration source throughout.
Where does the Frisbee fly otherwise?
But Windjammer 2 in terms of gameplay, optics and sound makes exactly what it should and convinces. Apart from occasional small sound errors and a unique crash, not much on the simple but appropriate technique can be used.
The biggest problem of the title is another: what he does, he does well - he does not do much. In terms of content, much more would have been here. In addition to the normal matches against CPU opponents and friends, optional or online, there is not much to do. The Arcade Mode and Cute Mini Games is also all that is present on correct single player content.
This is not a leg break, especially since the developers can feed new content after the launch - and hopefully. If that does not happen, it is likely to be the air with everything else soon.

Fast arcade Frisbee action to convince!
Windjammer 2 is perfect for what it is. If you can have your fun with such little titles and not always expecting so much, you are exactly right here. There is no big tr umber or eternal wait until you finally get into a match. From the start of the game to the first round, only a few seconds pass away. Despite this apparent simplicity, the gameplay convinces with enough depth. The nice optics including memorable character designs and matching music are also positive. But what speaks most for windjammer is the uniqueness. A sports game that goes in the direction of FIGHTING-GAME and focuses on the throw of Frisbees, you do not see every day. I just hope for significantly more content in the coming time.
